Human Sexuality

Why we need to talk about sex and sexual health

Sexuality is an important aspect of life - it is intimately tied to relationships & personal adjustment.  Sexual expression begins in infancy and can continue until end of life.  Sexual behavior serves numerous functions related to physiological and psychological development & well-being, in addition to procreation.  Sex is a source of pleasure & fulfillment, it also provides way to express feelings, caring, sharing & intimacy.  It also provides way to relieve stress & bonds at an intimate level.  It is a very powerful and a potent form of communication.   In Indian homes and Non-Western Sikh homes, talking about sex is a taboo.  Parents rarely know about sexual behaviors of their children and it is not very often that sex and human sexuality is openly discussed.

We are all gifted with sexual energy and are to use it sensibly as it confers upon us an immense power.  Sex is not a taboo or a hindrance to spirituality.  The ability to merge with ones spouse on a higher spiritual level and the ability to create life cannot be taken for granted.  WHO says it is the “integration of the somatic, emotional, intellectual and social aspects of sexual being, in ways that are positively enriching and that enhance personality, communication and love”.

Not all talk about the "forbidden" topic has to be X-rated.  Mr. Blecke was has been a great teacher and provided much needed support as a behavioral scientist as well as a friend to the interns during residency.  Many thanks for his generous consent to publish excerpts from his work to this section of SikhWomen website.

I have learned to approach this topic with sensitivity and understanding and to not be so quick to judge others.  This is a very interesting perspective from a healthcare point of view and you'll walk away feeling less guilt for enjoying something that means much more than just an act.  On the other hand we live in a society where a heightened awareness is imperative to educate the youth about dangers of promiscuity, consequences of pre-marital sex, Pregnancy and associated sexually transmitted diseases (STD awareness).  Counseling, guidance and education is needed on all fronts of this topic.  This section is without judgment and is dedicated to all the beautiful women and their inner strength and harmony.   – Gurpreet Kaur MD
